What If The Hokey Pokey Really Is What It's All About

Today I put on my BIG GIRL PANTIES and I'm working on the unique value proposition and marketing pitch for my new company. I'm staring at my Wall of Inspiration, which I've mentioned before houses funky signs I've collected over the years that inspire me and or make me laugh.

Lately I've been feeling comfort in going retro. Hula hooping, playing Checkers and Dominos, Etch- a-sketching, Silly Puttying and terrorizing Barbie, Ken and Midge.

I tried playing Red Rover because that was one of my favorite games as a kid. I could bust through anyone's arms. None of my friends want to play.

I tried to organize a kickball team but none of my friends were game.

I started playing 123 Redlight in the park the other day but the kids ran away to their Mamas like I was a nutcase.

Twister any takers?

I even tried playing hide and seek last night with Mr. Peach Tart but he said he'd only play naked hide and seek and it was too cold in the house to go sans clothing.

But I found something that I can do alone and I'm good at it.

That's right the Hokey Pokey.

I mean how hard can it be to stick your right foot in or out or shake it all about?

Precisely.

The perfect diversion when I'm feeling a little stressed it's Hokey Pokey time. We all take life so seriously and I realize there's a lots of serious shit going on in the world, but, what if for one afternoon, we all get down with the Hokey Pokey.

That's right, what if for one afternoon we just Hokey Pokey all around the house or office. Forget our cares and troubles. Forget our bank balance and stack of bills. Forget all the things that make us sad and worried.

For just one afternoon let's all pretend The Hokey Pokey is what it's all about.

Nothing more complicated than your right foot in and out and shaking all about.

Oh hell put your whole self in and out and shake it all about too.

Get jiggy with yourself.

It's just one afternoon.

What a concept! Doing the Hokey Pokey when you're not at a wedding reception.

You picked a good way to brighten up a bland afternoon! Just dancing in the house is always run, and it's exercise too!

Jimmy Buffett had a similar idea a few years back.

"Maybe it's all too simple
For our brains to figure it out
What if the hokey pokey
Is all it really is about"

I don't care about he dance Hokey Poker, but I could get into some Nude Twister and Nude Red Rover. Let's meet in Piedmont Park for a rousing game of Red Rover. That would be a hoot(er.)

I'm SO in especially if I can wear my roller skates...

I loved the hokey pokey when I was a kid. Everyone looked the same and no one was better than the other at it.

By the way, you can play jacks or marbles or pick up sticks or work puzzles too (by yourself).

Wish I lived close by, I could sure use a game of kickball.

We were driving the other day, and my son says...Look Mommy, there's your car. I drive a land rover and there was one the same color. I said, uh huh. He said, mommy, who makes a red rover? My daughter was cracking up.

I'm just glad you didn't say "The Chicken Dance."

I love kids' games. I would play any of the above mentioned games and/or dances with you. I'm really immature like that. :)

This is the best idea ever!! The company I work for is insanely serious and could use a jab in the arm with a Hokey Pokey needle.

I may date myself, but I remember exercising in Gym class to a song called "Go, you chicken fat, go." Can you imagine the looks on all of the PC faces of today if that came to school? Lighten up, world.

remember how fun that was when you were a kid!!! I loved Red Rover, and Etch a sketch is legendary!

I do the hokey pokey with the kid all the time, but maybe I SHOULD do it around the office. Just to give them a reason to treat me like a mental patient and stay far, far away.

I'll take you up on the twister but you have GOT to get into hopscotch. The weirdest most profound things come to you as your draw with the chalk, decorate it, then play.

Party on

Peach, I used to have a button that posed that very question! I used to love to hula hoop as a child, and now as an adult I have one of those weighted ones for fitness. I like the old ones better!

blueviolet said...

Yes, I think the hokey pokey may be just what I need! :)

Mejis said...

Sadly the Elmo doll my daughter has ruined the Hokey pokey for me. Can I do the Electric Slide instead?

adrienzgirl said...

I like to shake it all about!! :P

Maybe you've stumbled on the meaning of life. Hope so.

JennyMac said...

Having a 2 year old will also bring out the hokey pokey in you...even JohnnyMac has had his share of shaking it all about in our house with MiniMac as the ringleader. Love your retro style...and I'm with JenJen...rollerskates? Bring it.

Sometimes you just have to let go and be all of you at once. I'm pretty sure that's what happens when you do the Hokey Pokey dance Peach.;)

WhisperingWriter said...

Oh, I'll randomly start to dance around the house if I'm feeling down.

My husband thinks I'm nuts. Especially when I start to twirl around him. He's all, "The crap is going on around here?"

Eric said...

I guess you've never heard of X-Treme Hokey Pokey? It's done on the roof edge of a skyscraper.

'Hokey pokey' has always been a distant second to the 'If You're Happy and You Know It' game.

Great, I'm gonna be singing that all night now. Thanks, Peach.

The Hokey Pokey has too much hoke for it to be what it's all about for me, Peach! Can't we throw a little Bad Mamma Jamma in it?
